statement:
As an established northwest based artist Susan continues her professional practice working to commissions and exhibitions, whilst employed as Artist Educator on the Family Education Team at the Tate Gallery Liverpool. She undertakes residencies and workshops within schools and colleges.

Susan’s work is concerned with evolution, provocative defence systems and the primal instinct for survival achieved via diversity and adaptation. Repetition is a constant element in the work: repetition within diversity and diversity within repetition.

She creates hybrid sculptural forms exposing a glimpse of evolutionary fantasy, suggesting relationships between ancient organisms and their modern descendants.  Their ambiguity reflects cultural, social and environmental concerns of identity, protection and genetic engineering.  Viewed from a playful perspective, they transform a materials utilitarian functionality into mythical forms linking prehistoric with futuristic.

Her current work, ‘Cultural Crossings’ series explores the evolution of multiculturalism from its most primitive origins to its modern manifestations. It embodies the idea that culture is learned as a member of a community, an evolutionary process and is a product of an arbitrary historical experience of a people, it adapts and mutates as our environment changes. Indigenous people and art emerge from complex layered histories reflecting many cultural interactions.  Culture reveals unique differences between peoples, but equally reveals their similarities that are part of our human heritage.
