The Corke gallery opens the 2014 season with an exhibition of paintings by Wirral based artist Peter Macaulay in which he continues to explore and develop, what for him has been a lifelong inspiration – the human figure. His figures are usually quickly sketched and at all times treated to a degree of abstraction. He is unafraid to experiment and take risks. He freely distorts anatomy and generally offers an extra dimension to scenes.
Paradoxically, the inspiration for Macaulay’s work is leisure. In the exhibition there are numerous depictions of poolside or beach scenes. He moves effortlessly between representation and abstraction and makes great play of the space between these opposing points. The colours sing and despite the free-flowing lines, there is a solid geometry within his compositions.
Above all, there seems to be a tremendous sense of joie de vivre. His work is refreshing and above all, fun so I hope you can come along to see the work, meet the artist and enjoy a complimentary drink or two!
Peter’s work is now in many private collections in the UK and abroad and in 2012 he won the prestigious Charles Oliver award at ‘The Wirral Society of Arts Exhibition and was invited to judge the National Acrylic Painters’ Association annual exhibition.
